Where To Buy Xylitol? High Quality Xylitol Is So Hard To Find!

xylitol mints

When I was at dental school we were told how good xylitol is for preventing tooth decay and were encouraged to recommend it to all of our patients who were at high risk of getting decay. But where to buy xylitol?

The dental school instructors didn’t seem to know where to actually buy xylitol and it wasn’t easily found in the shops.  The sugar-free gums and other products containing xylitol that I was able to find had too small quantities of xylitol in them to be effective, so I didn’t recommend them.

Good luck finding good quality xylitol at the shops!

Good luck finding good quality xylitol at the shops!

It got awkward recommending xylitol to my patients, but not being able to tell them where they could find it, so I stopped recommending xylitol to them even though I knew it was highly effective at preventing tooth decay.

I mean, what’s the point of recommending using xylitol if they can’t find it?

Today, the situation hasn’t changed much. Most of the sugar free gum in the shops is still filled with sorbitol and mannitol, but very little xylitol.

Fortunately, thanks to the internet and a company that sells xylitol products online, finding good quality xylitol products is easy if you have access to a computer and an internet connection!

You can find good quality xylitol online

By the end of this article you will know what xylitol is, what the benefits of using it are, and most importantly how to get some for yourself.

Xylitol. The Essential Information:

  1. Xylitol is a natural alternative to sugar
  2. Xylitol prevents and reverses tooth decay
  3. Xylitol can help you lose weight
  4. Xylitol is not toxic
  5. Xylitol is good for diabetics
  6. Xylitol can be purchased online from Epic Dental

What is Xylitol?

Xylitol is a sugar found naturally in plant products like fruits and corn. Xylitol is even produced in the human body so you’re already used to processing xylitol and it’s not toxic.

Unlike normal sugar, xylitol can’t be used as a source of food by the bacteria on your teeth. Not only is it not a food source for bacteria, but it also prevents these bacteria from using other sugars as a source of food. As a result of having no food these bacteria die off before they can cause tooth decay. Great news for your teeth!

Benefits of Xylitol

In my earlier post I wrote about the benefits of using xylitol. The main benefit is for the prevention and reversal of tooth decay. The other big benefit (which may surprise you) is that xylitol can help you lose weight.

weight loss with xylitol

Xylitol has fourty percent fewer calories than sugar

Yes, you read that right.

You can eat all the sweet snacks you want and not get tooth decay or put on weight if the sugar you use is xylitol!

Dental benefits of xylitol

Dental researchers recommend the intake of at least six grams of xylitol per day, ideally divided evenly across the day. This can be achieved by taking two grams of xylitol after each meal by chewing xylitol gum or xylitol mints.

When people use xylitol regularly, they notice their teeth feel better when running their tongue over them. This is because xylitol eliminates the sticky plaque that is produced by normal sugar.

Xylitol will leave your teeth feeling clean and smooth

Xylitol helps prevent and reverse tooth decay in three ways:

  1. Killing the bacteria that cause tooth decay
  2. increasing salivation which neutralizes the acidity of the mouth and prevents the  tooth enamel from dissolving
  3. increasing the amount of calcium in the saliva which can then be used to replace the calcium that has been lost from the teeth from prior acid exposure

Xylitol for weight loss

Because xylitol tastes and looks like sugar, but has forty percent fewer calories than normal sugar you can substitute xylitol for normal sugar in your cooking without noticing much difference in taste and can expect to lose a significant amount of weight.

By eating xylitol in your meals like this, you will easily get the six grams of xylitol needed to prevent and reverse decay and you will also be drastically lowering your calorie intake and can expect to lose body fat.

There are some differences between sugar and xylitol that need to be allowed for when cooking with xylitol. For example xylitol won’t caramelize like sugar does and it can’t be used for making bread because xylitol won’t react with the yeast and make the bread rise. To make bread you need a fermentable sugar like normal sugar, glucose, or fructose.

Epic Dental sells a cookbook that will give you easy to follow recipes that use xylitol to make sweet, low calorie treats like cookies and ice cream that are good for your teeth and your waistline.

You can make just about any sweet treat you want with xylitol

Xylitol for diabetics

Xylitol doesn’t cause high blood sugar like normal sugar does, so is particularly good for diabetics. If you are diabetic and have a sweet tooth, I highly recommend you consider using xylitol as a substitute for normal sugar.

Xylitol is good for diabetics

Diabetics should use xylitol as their sweetener as it doesn’t elevate blood sugar levels.

Epic Dental. My preferred source of xylitol products

I recommend you try xylitol so you can see the benefits for yourself.

The problem is it’s difficult finding good quality xylitol products on the market. This is because xylitol is expensive and most companies choose to use ineffective quantities of xylitol and then pad their sugar-free products out with cheaper and less effective sweeteners like sorbitol, mannitol and aspartame in order to increase their profits.

It’s very difficult to get the recommended six grams of xylitol a day when using diluted products!

Epic Dental is a small business specializing in the production of high quality xylitol products including chewing gum, mintstoothpaste, and mouthwash. They also sell pure xylitol that is suitable for cooking with.

There are many reasons I prefer Epic Dental to source my xylitol, but the main reason is their products have the most xylitol in them. This makes it easy to get the six grams of xylitol you need to prevent tooth decay. I also like that they guarantee their products and their gums and mints taste the best.

Xylitol candy may well be the next big thing

I believe xylitol is going to become increasingly popular as people become more aware of the fact that xylitol is safe to use, that it prevents tooth decay, and that it helps people lose weight.

Now would be a good time for a company to produce sweet treats made out of xylitol. Imagine selling sweets that don’t cause tooth decay or weight gain? Sounds like a product that might be popular?

There aren’t many opportunities these days where you can get in on the ground floor. I think the xylitol market is going to become huge when people and the media finally wake up to how amazing this stuff is.

If you are considering making your own xylitol treats commercially, xylitol can be bought in wholesale quantities from Epic Dental.

Excellent article about xylitol, its benefits, and where to purchase. My first comment is where were you when I needed you all my life? Well, at least everyone can benefit now from this research.

I had a friend who was hypoglycemic. She always had to watch her sugar intake and carried almonds to nibble on whenever the need arose. When we visited India she discovered she could eat all their sugared deserts with zero effect. No longer needed almonds.

I did a little research and India uses sugar cane while the US uses sugar beets, and now these
sugar beets are GMOs. Moreover, in India they do not highly refine their sugar.

So how does this relate to xylitol? I don’t know, but I wanted to share my story to see what you could add, as you are the expert.

      Hi PJ

Thank you, I am glad you appreciated this article!

About your friend with the hypoglycaemia. Most people with hypoglycaemia are diabetics who have taken too much insulin or one of their other antidiabetic medicines which causes low blood sugar. In this case they need a high glycaemic index sugar like glucose or normal sugar to quickly get their blood sugar back up to normal. It can be a life threatening situation. As much as I am a fan of xylitol I would not recommend it for treating hypoglycaemia. Perhaps you meant hyperglycaemia though? In that case xylitol would be a fantastic option as it doesn’t elevate blood sugar.

I didn’t know that the US used sugar beets to make their sugar. That is interesting how your friend doesn’t seem to have problems when eating sugar from sugar cane, but does from sugar beet. I would have thought that the sugar would be absolutely identical chemically no matter if it came from cane or beets. So I am as puzzled as you are with that one!

    Hi David,
I am so pleased that I came across this article. I didn’t know the benefits of xylitol and I glad that you have shown me the many benefits it has.
I would love to reverse and prevent tooth decay (I don’t have it but I guess we all have to worry about it as we get older) but I do have pre-diabetes so I have to watch my sugar. It would be great to be able to substitute sugar for xylitol- I literally will be able to eat my cake and not have to think about tooth decay!
So you recommend 6 grams of xylitol to prevent tooth decay, what if you consume more than that, do you have any side effects?
Also how many grams of carbs are there per serving of xylitol?
Thanks again for sharing this informative post!

      Hi Dinh
I am glad I could show you the benefits of xylitol.

Yes, you can definitely substitute xylitol for sugar and if you have pre diabetes that would be a great idea and will help prevent it from developing into diabetes.

You can actually consume up to a pound of xylitol a day without any side effects if you do so gradually. If you take too much straight away though it will give SOME people diarrhea.

Because xylitol is a sugar it is 100% carbohydrate just like normal sugar is. So if you have 6g of xylitol, then that is 6g of carbohydrate. However, only about 60% of it is actually absorbed and what is absorbed is absorbed much slower than normal sugar is. This means xylitol has a low glycaemic index and much lower energy content compared with normal sugar, which is a good thing especially for diabetics.

        Hey David, I’m back again!
I am glad that I can consume up to 1lb of xylitol a day without the side effects. Is diarrhea the only side effect then? No headaches or something like that?
Nice to know that it is low glycemic- it’s just what I am looking for.
What it taste like? I don’t want to go and buy a whole big bag of it and then discover I don’t like the taste. I don’t like the taste of aspartme or stevia so I hope it isn’t similar!

        1. David Post author

          Hi Dinh

          Nice to meet you again!

Xylitol is very safe and I haven’t found any credible evidence of any problems with it other than stomach problems like gas, bloating and diarrhea when I have researched it in the medical databases.

It’s hard to described the taste. It’s very similar to sugar, the closest thing I have ever tasted and I find it hard to tell the difference, but there is a difference. Much more similar to the taste of sugar than aspartame and stevia, but it does taste a little different. Certainly doesn’t taste unnatural like aspartame and stevia do and there is no aftertaste either.

I suggest you get a small bag to begin with to play it safe. I agree it would be a shame if you bought a big bag and then you didn’t use it because you didn’t like the taste.

Let me know how you get on! If you have any more questions fire away.

Hi David, I’m surprised xylitol gums are hard to find in USA. Here in Finland we have xylitol gum in almost all stores! It’s popular here and everyone is aware of the benefits xylitol has on your teeth. I think it’s good you made the effort to find it. The visual image of a dentist explaining a patient to chew xylitol gum without knowing where to buy it made me laugh!

    1. David Post author

      Hi Matt

You got me curious how it is that Finns know all about xylitol and other countries are not so aware, so I did a little bit of googling. Found an article on the topic of Finland and xylitol. Here is a quote from the intro:

There’s no doubt Finland is the undisputed home of xylitol. If the UK is famous for the royal family, orderly queues and roast dinners, Finland’s equivalents are Santa Claus, saunas and xylitol. Xylitol mints, chewing gum and sweets can be found everywhere and you’d be hard pushed to find someone who didn’t know they were good for teeth. This is worlds apart from the UK, where xylitol is relatively unknown.

      I found that pretty interesting!

Yeah, it’s awkward explaining to people the benefits of xylitol, but not being able to send them anywhere to actually get it!

    Great article David!

Never heard of Xylitol before stumbling onto your website. Seems as though there are many benefits and applications when used and sold correctly and not just as a sales gimmick.

The end of your article, you mention that I can start my own business selling Xylitol, and Xylitol products. If I wanted to do something online, where could I go to learn a bit more about online marketing?

      Hi Marc

      Thanks for the comment.

Yes, xylitol really is a great product and it amazes me it isn’t more widely used because it really can prevent tooth decay and help with weight loss.

I am not a marketing expert, but I have learned a lot from a site online called Wealthy Affiliate. They teach how to set up a profitable website and it’s easy to learn. You should check the site out.
